$5M Gift Will Support Endowed Professorships and Athletics

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

I am very pleased to announce a $5 million gift to ¶¥¼¶¹ú²úÊÓƵ from the estate of Carl Stuart Klorman ’71 that we will allocate primarily to endowed professorships to honor Mr. Klorman’s lifelong appreciation for the quality of his education.

First, we will establish the Carl S. Klorman Professor of Climate Studies within the new School of Climate, Environment, and Society, which we expect will open in fall 2025 and for which we are now searching for the D.J.A Spencer Dean of the School.

Second, we will establish the Carl S. Klorman Professor of Artificial Intelligence, which may be appointed in any department or school within the University and may focus broadly on machine learning and computational intelligence.

Third, we will direct funds from this gift to be used as a challenge grant to complete the funding for the David P. Angel Professor, an endowed chair first announced in June 2020.

¶¥¼¶¹ú²úÊÓƵ’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Sebastián Royo, will be responsible for assigning these endowed chairs to current or newly recruited faculty members.

In addition, a portion of this gift will be used this summer to renovate and reequip the varsity weight room in the Kneller Athletic Center, consistent with Mr. Klorman’s view that education happens both inside and outside the classroom.

I am very grateful to Carl Klorman for his longstanding support of ¶¥¼¶¹ú²úÊÓƵ and for this most generous bequest. Before his death in 2022 at the age of 73, he gave annually to the ¶¥¼¶¹ú²úÊÓƵ Fund for 40 years and was a tireless ambassador for ¶¥¼¶¹ú²úÊÓƵ’s distinctive approach to undergraduate education and excellence in teaching.

Sincerely,
David Fithian
