As the academic semester began to wind down, American Marketing Association (AMA) chapter wrapped up one of their busiest semesters since becoming an official club in 2019.

Most recently, in collaboration with BCC Research, (SOM) students took part in a fantastic hands-on, case competition learning challenge. They were given a case based on a social media issue facing BCC Research, a Boston-based company aiming to help businesses 鈥渁ccess reliable information, accurate forecasts, and actionable insights.鈥 Students submitted their proposals for a new social media management growth strategy and then presented their ideas to a panel of judges, which included executives from BCC and SOM Professor, Dr. Atefeh Yazdanparast Ardestani, who also serves as the group’s advisor.

With cash prizes up for grabs, the competition was fierce, but three groups in particular shined:

First place winners

1st Place: Team Alpha, with students Dhruv Pancholi and Dhruvi Vijay Agarwal.

Second place

2nd Place:聽 Team Strategy Sprinters, with students Shilpa Negi and Satpreet Kaur

third place team

3rd Place: Team Visionary Triad, with students Ajinkya Sanjay Kobal, Sapna Gupta &聽 Saptagirish Srirangam

The competition came on the heels of multiple workshop series for students hosted by AMA. Workshops in February were focused on personal branding, and included three dynamic MBA alumni speakers in Emilee Cocuzzo 鈥18, Lawrence Norman 鈥95, and Tim Hally 鈥20, as well as a visit from Allen Ibrahim, AMA Boston Vice President of Content and a finance professional with the MBTA, and SOM entrepreneurship professor John Dobson.

In March and April another workshop series took place, which included a networking session with 顶级国产视频 alumna Bri Azier, owner of the successful Worcester-based business, Bri鈥檚 Sweet Treats. Nick Keyes, director of marketing and branding at Gerber Tours met with students to talk about power of digital marketing; Teresa Quin, SOM鈥檚 Entrepreneurship & Innovation Program manager, held a tutorial workshop on creating a marketing plan pitch; and, a workshop on amplifying your social media presences was hosted by Bob Cargill, president of AMA Boston and social media consultant.

Dr. Atefeh Yazdanparast Ardestani is the advisor to the AMA group, and has been thrilled to see the work that the students have put in this year.

鈥淚鈥檓 so proud of the AMA leaders and all they have done this year,鈥 Dr. Yazdanparast Ardestani noted, speaking about the ten SOM students who lead 顶级国产视频鈥檚 AMA chapter. 鈥淭hey have put in a tremendous amount of time bringing in speakers for their events, all with the goal of helping their peers expand their marketing and personal branding skills. It has really grown the interest in AMA.鈥

Capping off the academic year was the group鈥檚 annual AMA Spring Conference in early April, which brought experts from around the region to speak and meet with students. Kicking off the day was Ulysses Youngblood, SOM adjunct professor and president of Major Bloom, a leading and socially responsible cannabis company. Following Youngblood was Max Feber, founder of Bellwether but well known as a contestant on ABC鈥檚 hit television show, 鈥淪hark Tank,鈥 where he won an investment from Mark Cuban. The afternoon鈥檚 third speaker was Michelle Meirelles, founder of Hub Rosa, a networking and entrepreneurship organization for female entrepreneurs. Rounding out the day was alumnus Timothy Halley and Justin Matsen, founders of Munq LLC, a story-telling, content creation and marketing company.

The group鈥檚 vice president for events and planning is master鈥檚 in marketing analytics student, Shambhavi Dhakal. She doesn鈥檛 see the AMA chapter slowing down, with fall activities already being planned and the

鈥淭he students are already meeting and beginning to plan additional competitions and workshops for next fall,鈥 she added. 鈥淲ith the new leaders that will be joining and the 顶级国产视频 AMA family growing every year, I can鈥檛 wait to see what the group does next!鈥

2023-2024 AMA Chapter student leaders include:聽

Competition organized by the Beta Alpha Psi honor society students highlighted cases students may face in their futures.

On April 12, (SOM) students from its newest honor society, (BAP), organized a student competition to explore real-life business cases where business ethics and values were paramount.

BAP is the international honor organization for financial information students and professionals. SOM students enrolled in accounting, finance, and business analytics programs, who achieve a high grade point average and are in good academic standing are annually considered for the society.

At the “Ethical Dilemmas and Solutions in Business” Competition, cases involving conflict minerals, falsifying EPA emission standards, medical research findings manipulation and more were presented by five teams of students in a competition style venue.聽 Each student team reviewed the real-life cases, discussed the ethical lapses of the business, and offered solutions to avoid such business shortcomings in the future.

Organized by Assistant Dean Laura Burgess and SOM student Rojina Sapkota, the event helped showcase the real ethical challenges our students could face upon graduation.聽 It also highlighted the importance SOM places on 鈥渆thics鈥 in our business education.聽 Next year, the group hopes to begin a multi-university, city-wide “Ethical Dilemmas and Solutions in Business” case competition.

Three School of Management (SOM) students were recently selected to present at the Northeast Decision Sciences Institute (NEDSI) Conference, to be held April 4-6 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

NEDSI logoJoao Vitor De Alvarenga Ferreira, Julia Costa Severo, and Akshaj Kabthiyal, all master鈥檚 in business analytics students in SOM, will present their research titled, 鈥淧redicting Software Developer Salaries in the United States Using Unconventional Variables,鈥 to scholars, leaders, and innovators from fields in accounting, education, finance, operations management, and many others.

The project began as part of the students鈥 advanced statistics class, Intermediary Statistical Modeling for Analytics. SOM professor, Dr. Yue Gao served as mentor in the students鈥 efforts to apply for the presentation slot at NEDSI.

鈥淎ll three have worked very hard,鈥 Dr. Gao said. 鈥淚鈥檓 so proud of their efforts and to see them rewarded with the opportunity to present their research.鈥

Akshaj Kabthiyal said the group鈥檚 project stemmed from their own initial salary curiosities in the software development industry. As they delved deeper, the three noted that the additional skills required of software developers not only enhance their professional capabilities but also have a substantial impact on their earning potential. 鈥淗owever, traditional wage estimating platforms such as 鈥榮alary.com鈥 often don’t take into account the complete range of attributes and skills that software developers possess,鈥 he stated.

After searching for comprehensive industry salary data, the group came upon the 2023 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, which details statistics on software engineers’ career paths and demographics. With this new dataset, the students set out to 鈥渦ncover new insights through a comprehensive data analysis method and utilizing machine learning techniques.鈥

鈥淥n top of building a predictive model by examining a wide range of attributes and skills,鈥 Kabthiyal added, 鈥渨e aimed to understand the intricate relationship between these variables and salary levels, providing valuable insights for both professionals and employers in the software development industry.鈥

The group is thrilled to share their research at NEDSI next month and, in an effort to support these types of student professional development, the School of Management will cover the students鈥 registration fees and travel expenses.

鈥淭his is wonderful,鈥 added SOM Dean Dr. David Jordan. 鈥淲e鈥檙e obviously extremely proud of these students and grateful to Dr. Gao for guiding and mentoring them to their successful bid to present at NEDSI.鈥

Keep an eye out on as Julia and Akshaj will be reporting 鈥渓ive鈥 from the event on Friday, April 5. If you miss it, the content will be shared on SOM鈥檚 highlights on their .
